Objectives

The objectives of this resource are:
  • to highlight the economic necessity of effectively managing mental health issues in the workplace;
  • to encourage managers to take a proactive approach to achieving positive mental health within their workplace;
  • to remind employers of their legal responsibilities in relation to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and to provide some guidance on making ‘reasonable adjustments’;
  • to address the key issues relating to staff and mental health problems;
  • to inform and educate managers about mental health problems;
  • to support line managers through the early identification of the behavioural warning signals associated with stress, anxiety and mild depression;
  • to provide guidance to line managers on how to effectively deal with absence, conflict, bullying and harassment; and,
  • to raise awareness of the comprehensive support available to employers to promote good mental health in the workplace.
